PREORDER Melt the Ice Hat
In the 1940’s, Norwegians made and wore red pointed hats with a tassel as a form of visual protest against Nazi occupation of their country. Within two years, the Nazis made these protest hats illegal and punishable by law to wear, make, or distribute. This design has been revived for 2026.

Description
Update: Thank you for your interest and support! As of 2/1, I’m currently at a 5-6 week turnaround for these PREORDER Melt the Ice hats
Note that the exact shade of red will vary depending on what yarn I have available, but it will be all natural fiber, likely merino or another soft, smooth wool. If you have a preference for bright red vs burgundy, please include that in the order notes.
These will be for approximately 21-22” circumference, but merino is a stretchy fiber and the pattern calls for 6” of ribbing, which makes a very stretchy pattern, so they will have a lot of “give” to fit around most adult heads. If you fold the ribbing, these will fit tightly against your head as this Melt the Ice pattern does not have much “slouch.”
I will donate $15 of every Melt the ice hat sold to a nonprofit organization assisting immigrants in Minnesota
From Yarn Cult, the pattern author:
In the 1940’s, Norwegians made and wore red pointed hats with a tassel as a form of visual protest against Nazi occupation of their country. Within two years, the Nazis made these protest hats illegal and punishable by law to wear, make, or distribute. As purveyors of traditional craft, we felt it appropriate to revisit this design.
All proceeds from the sale of this pattern go to the immigrant aid agencies who will distribute the funds to those impacted by the actions of ICE.
